Senior Attorney, US Department of Health and Human Services

>> My name is Andrea Timashenka. I'm a Senior Attorney at the US Department of Health and Human Services. So I have a pretty wide portfolio right now. I advise the office of the Surgeon General. I do some research integrity work. I do work in patient safety. I advise some graduate medical education programs, a whole bunch of different stuff. As I think that's true of a lot of people, every day is a little different, which is part of the fun part of my job, but I tend to spend a lot of my day at my desk, on the phone, or writing emails, and then scurrying between different meetings. So I basically usually field incoming questions from different clients, and depending on if it's something I can respond to immediately or if it's something that's going to take some research or I need to consult with my team to get back with them, that's generally how I spend my day. For instance, with the Office of the Surgeon General, that is an office that's looking to really be public facing and have a lot of different events, so they really want to try to get the community involved. So one of their biggest questions is, you know, this group or that group approached us, how -- and there's different rules when you're in the government about how you can work with people in the private sector, so they're coming, saying, you know, is this in bounds? Is this out of bounds? How could we reach more people? When you're in the government, one of the ways that they work with outside entities a lot on joint project would be a co-sponsorship, and so I help them work together and working with the other group in figuring out who's going to do what role and making sure everyone's doing it in a way no one can get in trouble.
